Annually, cars running red lights account for 260,000 crashes in the United States, which is 22 percent of all vehicle crashes. The disregard of traffic signals or stop signs accounted for 28,019 accidents in Texas in 1998, of which 191 involved fatalities. Red light cameras have been in use for over 40 years, and 10 states currently have laws that permit camera enforcement of red light runners. Of those states using automated camera technology, significant reductions in the number of accidents and fatalities caused by red light runners are common. During the 77th Legislative Session, the House made an attempt to pass HB 1115, but the bill died due to a tie vote.
